$1,000 Active Life Scholarship to Tackle Your Weakness, Deadline: July 31, 2017, and How to Search for More than $100,000 in scholarships– Scholarships for Summer Completion Academy

July 17, 2017

In celebration of Summer Completion Academy, I want to point out several scholarships you can apply for.

$1,000 Active Life Scholarship to Tackle Your Weakness, Deadline: July 31, 2017

http://www.getupgetactive.org/active-life-weakness/

Selected criteria from webpage:

“Who: Current high school or college students age 15 years or older.

What: This scholarship encourages students to identify and take action to improve a weakness and begin to transform it into a strength.

Amount: $1,000. May be used at any college to study any major.”

This scholarship only requires 3-5 sentences and answering a few questions. Literally, you create the answer by studying the page, looking at the resources on the website, thinking about the weakness, and writing up the answer.

You are asked about your weakest subject and “are you ready to face your weakness and transform it into a strength.”

Then in 3-5 sentences, you answer only ONE of the following: “What do you consider one of your greatest weaknesses? -OR- Why is it important to try to improve a weakness?

Developing a Strategy for Scholarship Money Searches

Scholarshiptigers.com is on a mission to help you find more scholarship money, less college debt.

I update this blog twice a week, so reading past blog entries will assist you greatly.

Sign up to receive these blog posts in your email.  I will tell you how  after I discuss some strategies.

APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS AS A PART TIME JOB

First, students can finance up to their $30,000 a year tuition bill if they make seeking scholarships a part time job. Apply for scholarships, even small ones. I have read several students who have amassed $30,000 or more with several small scholarships, such as $250, $500, or $1,000 scholarships.

https://scholarshiptigers.com/2017/07/12/1000-couponchief-com-scholarship-program-d-july-31-2017-and-felecia-hatcher-author-of-the-c-students-guide-to-scholarships/

This blog post from last week discussed how one student, Felecia Hatcher, author of THE C STUDENT’S GUIDE TO SCHOLARSHIPS, won over $100,000 for scholarships, even though her GPA fluctuated between a 2.1 and 2.7.

Also, another scholarship, the $1,000 CouponChief.com Scholarship Program, D: July 31, 2017, is discussed.

An eagle flies down to catch a fish 91 to 97 times out of a 100 before successfully catching it once, so an eagle is successful about 3 to 9 percent of the time.

If you apply to 1,000 scholarships and get 30 scholarships (often enough to finance a year at school), then you have a success rate of 3%, just like the eagle.

However, you shouldn’t just apply, you should notice that scholarship providers seem to ask similar questions, so you can develop and fine tune each answer to each scholarship. Make appointments in the TSU Writing Center to strategically plan out and write a great response.

Work smarter, not harder.  You are not awarded for how long it takes you to complete a task; you are awarded for taking some time, stepping back, reflecting, fine tuning the process, getting better and better at each stage.

Set smaller goals to get you started. Look at scholarships on this page. Complete one scholarship by the end of this week. Then, go for five scholarships, and then go for ten scholarships by the end of July or August 2017. These are all doable.

Spend 1-2 hours a week at first, and build up to longer hours if necessary.

I try to list a scholarship and then WHERE YOU can SEARCH for more scholarships. Each entry then is a roadmap to bigger possibilities.

PLAN FOR BIGGER SCHOLARSHIPS: PLANNING FOR THE $100,000 Dr. Pepper Tuition Giveaway; the $10,000, $5,000, and $2,500 Taco Bell Live Mas Scholarship; and other Scholarships

https://scholarshiptigers.com/2017/07/13/scholarships-for-the-future-100000-dr-pepper-tuition-giveaway-scholarship-america-dream-award-other-future-scholarships-you-can-prepare-for-now/

Last week, I also dealt with scholarships that pay out larger than $500 and $1,000 and how to plan for them.

I did not list the Taco Bell Live Mas Scholarship last week because I wasn’t sure if the foundation had changed the rules to only apply that scholarship to Taco Bell employees. I emailed them and asked (get in the habit of asking questions; by asking questions students have gotten several favorable replies, including  a scholarship limit of about a $3,100 limit lifted to about $3,400; she was encouraged to apply and since the need was only a few hundred dollars more, the scholarship provider came back with the reply that if she won, they could meet that need.)

Ask, ask, ask.

Scholarships for the Future: $100,000 Dr. Pepper Tuition Giveaway; Scholarship America Dream Award; Other Future Scholarships You Can Prepare For Now

July 13, 2017

Preparing for the Future—Planning for Scholarships

If you are an incoming freshman to Tennessee State University or a returning undergraduate or graduate student, you can start preparing yourself  for scholarships that will open in the future.

If you are entering college or continuing your education at the high school level, then Fall 2017 is the time to search out scholarships and see what it is within your power to do.

If one of the scholarships requires a 3.0 and you earn a 2.3 during Fall 2017, then you are moving towards a 3.0. Progress, even setbacks, are opportunities to see what you can do to move forward or correct present action to bring about different, future results.

Now, you may not know it, but as mentioned before, several scholarships require no GPA, and some require a minimum GPA of 2.0 or 2.5 or higher.

The Shawn Carter (Jay-Z) Foundation, which opens in April 2018, requires a minimum 2.0 GPA. Of course, those with higher GPAs can also apply and are encouraged to apply.

Write down the name, cut and paste the link, and save it under the month and year it will open as well as close in your Scholarship List. For example,

Some Scholarships You Can Prepare For

Some of these scholarships pertain to regional or particular school attended. Some do not. I will list some pertinent information but not all. You will have to go to the websites to see the full criteria. You may have to visit them closer to the opening dates.

Many of these I have written about, but I want you to start preparing yourself now for the opportunity.

Thurgood Marshall College Fund, ongoing

By clicking on the Full List, you can review all the scholarships offered.

TMCF administers scholarships to 47 HBCUs (TSU is one of them). Since the TMCF administers 500 scholarships, I advise you check back every two weeks to see what is open, but if you are close to the beginning of Fall 2017 semester, I would check back every week.

Many people fail to review the criteria for each scholarship. For example, in the general criteria listed for TMCF scholarships, 3.0 out of a 4.0 is listed.

However, this is the general criteria, and I have seen scholarships with minimum GPA of 2.0 or 2.5.

Check each scholarship. Also, while TMCF scholarships often go to students at one of 47 HBCUs, I have seen them administer scholarships that could apply to an HBCU or another school. It is important to read all the criteria for each scholarship.

$1,000 CouponChief.com Scholarship Program, D: July 31, 2017, and Felecia Hatcher, author of THE “C” STUDENTS GUIDE TO SCHOLARSHIPS

July 12, 2017

Fail Your Way to Success

Felecia Hatcher wanted to go to college and was told by her guidance counselor she would not be able to go. She had a GPA that “fluctuated between a 2.1 and a 2.7” (5), and “won over a $100,000 to attend college” (back cover).

Felecia Hatcher, author of THE “C” STUDENTS GUIDE TO SCHOLARSHIPS and START YOUR BUSINESS ON A RAMEN NOODLE BUDGET, discusses the importance of sharing your failure story in the following TED Talk video:

As Ms. Hatcher mentions in her talk, our society is filled with stories of success, but we don’t hear the stories of failures.

Learning often involves failing. Remember back to something you know how to do well, such as play a video game  or sing a song or play a sport or do well in math or English.

Did you always know how to do that well? Remember, you had to fail before you became good– you had to try and try, readjust, make corrections, keep practicing, to get further, to become better, to become proficient.

You failed your way to success.

Many adults give up after only 5 or 7 or less tries. However, as a baby, you tried to walk and you had to fail over 100, over a 1,000 times, over many more times.

Did somebody stop and say to you, “Oh, walking seems too much for you. You’ve tried over 100 times. It’s time to rest. Walking doesn’t seem the thing for you.” No, you had enough courage and skill to keep going because your baby brain was smart enough not to stop.

Ask those people you admire have they ever had difficulties and when they say yes, then you ask them what did they do. Take notes if you can.

Fail your way to success and more college money.

I liked Felecia Hatcher’s THE “C” STUDENTS GUIDE TO SCHOLARSHIPS so much, I bought it as a resource.

If you are a Tennessee State University student, you can come by and look over the book, taking notes in room 117 in the Student Success Center.  You can email Mr. Turner at mjturner@tnstate.edu

Also, check the previous Scholarship Tigers blog for scholarships that require no GPA, only creativity and the willingness to try. And asking for help if you need it.

Hatcher, Felecia. The “C” Students Guide to Scholarships. Peterson’s Publishing, 2012.

A 2nd edition of this book exists.

Now, if you are ready to try, read some past blog entries and apply to scholarships. Make it your goal to apply to 10 scholarships by the end of August 2017.

HOW I FOUND THIS SCHOLARSHIP and Creating a Scholarship List

I went to google and typed the following into the search engine, NASHVILLE SCHOLARSHIP July 2017.

I was looking for scholarships with a Nashville angle that had deadlines in July 2017.  I found the above scholarship on page 3 of the results.

Sometimes you need to go beyond page 1 to find results.

However, I also found other scholarships that had already passed.

I opened a Microsoft Word document, and started cutting and pasting links for scholarships that I might want to show to students as they come open.

First, I typed the month, like July 2017, and then I cut and pasted the link for the Max MeElhaney Educational Scholarship, and then cut information about the scholarship, just small details like the deadline.

Then, I cut and pasted links for upcoming scholarships, giving possible dates based on the past.

For example, three upcoming scholarships I will now be looking for:

October 2017

Opening, later part of October

Nashville ATHENA Awards Program

January 2018

https://www.milb.com/sounds/news/sounds-announce-2017-scholarship-program-details/c-212912468/t-196093378

Opening Jan 2018

Nashville Sounds Fnd Scholarship, 4 $2,500 scholarships

February 2018

http://www.same.org/Get-Connected/Find-a-Post/Nashville/Scholarship

Opening , mid-Feb

SAME Nashville Post Scholarship

I will collect more information and possibly post them as they become open.

I saved my scholarship list as “Opening and Deadlines Scholarships 2017,” and put that in a folder on my flash drive as Scholarship List, so I can easily find the list and update it.

You can easily create your own scholarship list, cutting and pasting only scholarships that would apply to you.

You can use your own personal word processing program or use Google drive to “upload and store all your files online.”   There are other programs for storing files online: Dropbox, Box, Microsoft OneDrive, and C:\Drive.

$1,000 Digital Responsibility Scholarship, D: June 30, 2017

A 140-character message about digital privacy could lead to $1,000. Read more below.

Selected criteria from webpage:

“It’s important to understand that almost anything you post on the Internet is neither temporary nor private. And posting too much information can have devastating consequences. Forty-three percent of employers who checked on social media have decided not to hire someone, according to a CareerBuilder survey. Twelve percent of college admissions officers who checked Facebook decided not to admit an applicant according to a Kaplan Test Prep survey.

The purpose of this scholarship is to help you understand why you should be cautious about what you post on the Internet.”

Who may apply: You must be a high school freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior or a current or entering college or graduate school student of any level. Home schooled students are also eligible. There is no age limit. You must also be a U.S. citizen or legal resident.

How to apply: Complete the application form below including a 140-character message about digital privacy. The top 10 applications will be selected as finalists. The finalists will be asked to write a full length 500- to 1,000-word essay about digital privacy.

Deadline: June 30, 2017

How we’ll select the winner: We’ll select the 10 finalists based on the content of the 140-character message. The winner will be selected based on the content and creativity of the 500- to 1,000-word essay.
