A Journey to a $1000 Active Life Scholarship for Financial Literacy D: June 30, 2017

$1,000 Active Life Scholarship for Financial Literacy, D: June 30, 2017

http://www.getupgetactive.org/scholarship/

I would read the entire webpage, including the right hand side on “Financial Literacy.”

 Selected criteria from webpage:

Who: Current college, graduate school or adult learners.

What: This scholarship is designed to encourage students to increase their financial literacy skills and adopt positive habits for managing their personal finances both in college and beyond.

Amount: $1,000. May be used at any college to study any major”

This scholarship only requires 3-5 sentences and answering a few questions. Literally, you create this answer by studying the page, thinking about it, and writing up several answers.

A Modest Proposal: Scheduling an appointment at the TSU Writing Center

If you are a Tennessee State University student, you can sign up to go over your 3-5 sentences scholarship application at the TSU Writing Center. Here is how you go about it.

https://tnstate.mywconline.com/register.php

Once you create an account for the schedule, you can see when Michael Turner or another tutor is available and make an appointment.

Go to the above link and register.  It will ask you questions.  I would choose an email that I check often. It could be the email associated with your phone.

Once you have registered, you can sign in to the schedule by putting in your username (email address) and the password you created.

Select “Writing Center Summer I 2017” for the current TSU Writing Center schedule.

You cannot schedule for the day you register, but there are directions once you log on for what to do if you need an appointment for that same day.

Let the TSU Writing Center help you work towards more money, less college debt.

Some Precautions before We Begin

If scholarships are easy, you need to ask why. If we are talking about websites, some websites  wish to collect your information so that they can sell to you or share your information with advertising partners.

Some websites list marvelous scholarships, but contain many ads that might lead to unscrupulous offers. Money that websites make come from ads based on click through; sometimes websites list great information, but have very little control over what is placed as ads on their websites. One scholarship website that has great information also has links so close together that you might click through to something not as legitimate. I will discuss that later in this post.

Other sponsors really do want to offer scholarships where very little is involved to give back and to promote brand recognition.

If you are attempting to apply for an easy scholarship, be smart about it. I actually have a separate email just for contests such as the Publishers Clearing House, which I check, but I keep this address to protect my “official,” business email, the type I put on applications or sign up for legitimate services.

Create an email just to apply for scholarship contests. Write down the website, email address, username, and password. Don’t rely on memory. Keep it somewhere you can find it, such as a notebook or a note on your cell phone.

In the comment section underneath the “10 Words or Less Scholarship,” answer the question.”

The second link above takes you the 10 Words or Less initial scholarship page.

Studentscholarships.org seems to have lots of great scholarships, but this page also hides its links among advertisements.

Avoid the $10,000 Mom Type of Scholarships and Why

Why do I object to the “$10,000 Mom Scholarship?” Some scholarships are legitimate in that they do give away the money, but they also collect a lot of information on you. I signed up for a particular scholarship like this (the rules said that I could give the money away to others), and the first month I successfully clicked through without anybody calling me. The second month I wasn’t so lucky, and I received a call from a for-profit college. I hung up.

Another student I advised to visit a scholarship website did click on the link, and they received a call from a for-profit college. This for-profit college told the student it didn’t matter what his GPA was or whether he had enough money to attend college. This set up alarm bells right away. Some for-profit colleges charge high rates and want to get students in the door to collect the money, use up all the financial aid the students qualify for, and then leave with no degree or a degree that won’t get them a decent job. Some for-profit colleges have questionable enrollment practices.

And if the student then wants to attend a more traditional college, the federal government will not pay for the same class at the traditional university, and often the classes earned at some for-profit colleges are not transferable to a traditional college.

If you are aware of this, you can maneuver yourself away from scams, but I now don’t click on “$10,000 scholarships” unless I am sure they are more legitimate.  I also give out the advice, “Avoid the $10,000 Mom scholarship type ads.”

http://www.gao.gov/products/GAO-10-948T

“For-Profit Colleges: Undercover Testing Finds Colleges Encouraged Fraud and Engaged in Deceptive and Questionable Marketing Practices,” report by the U.S. Government Accountability Office, released on Aug 4, 2010

From webpage: “Undercover tests at 15 for-profit colleges found that 4 colleges encouraged fraudulent practices and that all 15 made deceptive or otherwise questionable statements to GAO’s undercover applicants. Four undercover applicants were encouraged by college personnel to falsify their financial aid forms to qualify for federal aid–for example, one admissions representative told an applicant to fraudulently remove $250,000 in savings. Other college representatives exaggerated undercover applicants’ potential salary after graduation and failed to provide clear information about the college’s program duration, costs, or graduation rate despite federal regulations requiring them to do so.”

As the movement toward less regulation is implemented, there is a chance that fraud will rise once again in the for-profit college arena; it is the job of the consumer to be aware and to be wary.

Employer Sponsored Scholarship Programs and Employer Foundations, Begin Your Search; Also, exploring for more scholarships

June 2, 2017

Employer Sponsored Scholarship Programs and Employer Foundations

Where do you work? Where do your parents work? Write these places down or find out.

“Why?” you may ask. Simple. Sometimes your employer will have scholarships to give its employees, or the employers of your parents will have scholarships available not only to your parents, but to their dependents. You or your parent can often contact the Human Resources department to find out if there are any scholarships or tuition reimbursements available. Also, this information may be available on the employer’s website.

Sometimes your employer will have a foundation which gives out scholarships. For example, Burger King has a foundation that gives out scholarships to high school seniors and scholarships for Burger King employees:

Burger King Scholars McLamore Foundation

https://bkmclamorefoundation.org/who-we-are/programs/burger-king-scholars-program/application-information/

selected from webpage: The BURGER KING℠ Scholars program assists employees, employees’ spouses or domestic partners, employees’ children and high school seniors in the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada in continuing their education. To date, the program has awarded more than $28.3 million in scholarships and the program continues to grow. Last year alone $3 million in scholarships were awarded.”

The application period for the 2018-2019 school year begins on Oct. 15, 2017 and closes Dec. 15, 2017.

The requirements to become a BURGER KING℠ Scholar are simple. You must apply within the application period, and fit the prerequisites below:

  • Have a strong academic record with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.5,
  • Be passionate about serving the community, and
  • Be a high school senior, BURGER KING® employee, spouse/domestic partner or child of an employee.”

Sometimes your employer will be a part of a trade group or an association that gives out scholarships.

If you are a nontraditional student with one degree already wishing to seek a second degree, such as Tennessee State University’s new Executive MBA program http://tnstatenewsroom.com/archives/19985 , allowing you to receive an MBA in a year, then you can explore whether your employer offers tuition assistance or tuition reimbursement.

If you cannot finish in a year, you might be able to take classes over the course of a year or two, having your employer reimburse the costs or pay for it.

Also, those seeking first degrees, tuition assistance or tuition reimbursement may be included in your benefits. Research this.

Chevron International REACH Scholarship

An example of an employer sponsored scholarship to help dependents of employees is the Chevron International REACH Scholarship.

https://www.iie.org/en/Programs/Chevron-International-REACH-Scholarship-Program

Selected information from webpage:

“What is the Chevron International REACH Scholarship?

The Chevron International REACH (Recognizing Excellence and Achievement) Scholarship Program is sponsored by Chevron for the sons and daughters of its employees and retirees. The program was established to recognize and assist outstanding children who plan to pursue post-secondary education.

Renewable scholarships are offered each year for full-time undergraduate study at colleges, universities, and vocational schools. The scholarships for children of non-U.S.-payroll employees are managed by the San Francisco office of the Institute of International Education

Who is eligible to apply?

Applicants must be children of active employees (including retirees) of Chevron and its wholly owned subsidiaries as of the application due date.

What benefits does the scholarship provide?

Scholarship awards will range from $500 to $2,500 per year. A limited number of one-time, non-renewable $1,500 honorariums will be granted to students who demonstrate high merit but not relative financial need as outlined in our Benefits section.”

One thing leads to another: This was found on the IIE Website, which by clicking around, I found this database:

https://www.iie.org/Programs

From webpage: “IIE manages more than 200 programs with participants from more than 185 countries. In the last year alone, more than 27,000 people participated in IIE managed programs. Use our program finder to explore opportunities.”

WHERE I FOUND THE CHEVRON INTERNATIONAL REACH SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

I found the above scholarship at the following website:

https://www.scholarships.com/financial-aid/college-scholarships/scholarships-by-type/employer-and-employee-scholarships/

Employer and Employee Scholarships at Scholarships.com  (be wary of the ads that dot this page; the information around the ads is good, but the “$10,000 Mom Scholarship ads” are not!)

I didn’t find a direct link for the Chevron Scholarship, so I had to google the title; I cut and pasted it into another browser window.

There are many more employer sponsored scholarships on this page, but buried deep within are also foundation scholarships not attached to employees but given to students.

EXPLORING THE WEB (How I discover scholarships and where they hide)

When I am typing up and creating blog posts, I will often first explore ideas that are aimed to help students. For example, this search was first started when a person contacted me looking for a way to pay for a second degree at Tennessee State University. I first thought, “Let’s see what’s out there, and then, ‘Perhaps her employer will have some type of program.’”

Since this person never emailed me, there was no way I could contact her to set up a scholarship coaching session, where I could ask her questions such as “Who is your employer? How old are you? What is your current degree? Do you belong to any professional organizations?

With these answers, we could begin a search for scholarships pertaining to her situation.

Below, I have created a PDF out of links and other areas that would set me looking. One thought leads to another.

Scholarship-Possibiliites-and-Resources-PDF-2-June-2017

I didn’t have time to write all this up, so it is food for many other blog posts, or the posts may never get written up and created.

Some ideas and links I didn’t get a chance to explore are Financial Aid for older and nontraditional students, look to parents’ employers for college scholarships, employer tuition assistance, student aid and scholarships for second degree students, H & R Block Budget Challenge (a contest for student teams in high schools which carry scholarships; teams must be led by a teacher), and an article about re-considering co-signing student loans. And there are more.
