http://www.davisputter.org/

From website: “The Davis-Putter Scholarship Fund provides grants to students actively working for peace and justice. These need-based scholarships are awarded to those able to do academic work at the university level and who are part of the progressive movement on the campus and in the community. Undergrad Scholarship Program for Individuals from Disadvantaged Backgrounds, Deadline: March 14, 2017

I just discovered this program, so if you qualify, get busy.

If you have missed the deadline, keep it in mind for next year.

https://www.benefits.gov/benefits/benefit-details/487

Some of the information from the website:

“Managing Agency: U.S. Department of Health and Human Services

Program Description

This program provides service-conditioned scholarships to individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds who agree to pursue undergraduate education at accredited institutions. Individuals must pursue a course of study which prepares them for professions needed by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The maximum scholarship per academic year is $20,000. Scholarship funds may only be used for tuition/educational and living expenses incurred while attending school.

Each recipient must agree by written contract to serve as an NIH employee full-time for not less than 10 consecutive weeks of each year during which the individual is receiving a scholarship. In addition, no later than 60 days after obtaining the educational degree, each recipient must begin serving as a full-time NIH employee for one year for each year of NIH scholarship support (a deferment of the service obligation may be obtained if appropriate).

General Program Requirements

In order to qualify for this benefit program, you must be a U.S. national, citizen or permanent resident who is pursuing a bachelor’s degree and has a current grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0-point scale or who is within the top 5 percent of your class.”

More information at the link above.

Scholarships for Low GPAs

March 2, 2017

Last year, I started to read a book online using Overdrive (read it through my cell phone, an app that the Nashville Public Library uses).

The name of the book was The “C” Students Guide to Scholarships by Felecia Hatcher. I was impressed so much that I decided to buy the book itself.  Felecia Hatcher was an average student in high school, her grades “[fluctuating] between a 2.1 and a 2.7” (5).  Despite this, she amassed over $120,000 in “free money” to pay for college (6).

This got me thinking, so I went googling, using the search terms “scholarships for 2.0 GPA 2017.”

Here are a few I found.

  1. https://www.afsascholarship.org/secondchance/

$1,000 American Fire Sprinklers Association (AFSA) –five are available—opens April 12, 2017 to August 30, 2017.

From webpage: “Open to citizens and aliens legally residing in the USA with High School Diploma, GED or equivalent.

Winner must be enrolled for Spring 2018 session

Relatives of AFSA staff or NATIONAL board members may not enter.”

WHERE I FOUND IT: http://college.usatoday.com/2013/11/18/5-scholarships-that-dont-require-a-great-gpa/

USA TODAY COLLEGE article, “5 scholarships that don’t require a Great GPA”

  1. http://www.amvets.org/amvets-in-action/scholarships/

American Veterans Scholarships—open to demographics below

From webpage:

Three specific to Veterans, Active Duty, Guard/Reserves:

  • $4,000 The AMVETS Scholarship
  • $12,000 Dr. Aurelio M. Caccomo Family Foundation Memorial Scholarship
  • $1,000 Henry G. Huestis Memorial Scholarship

Two specific to children/grandchildren of Veterans, Active Duty, Guard/Reserves who are currently High School seniors, 2016-2017:

  • $4,000 AMVETS Scholarship
  • $1,000 JROTC Scholarship (must be in High School JROTC to apply)”

Deadline for scholarships above is May 1, 2017.

  1. https://www.shawncartersf.com/scholarship-fund/

Shawn Carter/Jay Z Foundation Scholarship

Opens April 1, 2017

Deadline: April 30, 2017

From webpage: “All high school seniors, students with GED diplomas, undergraduate (2yr or 4yr) college students, and students at vocational or trade schools who meet the requirements below are eligible.

Requirements:
US citizen or Permanent Resident
25 years old or younger
Minimum 2.0 GPA”

WHERE I FOUND IT: http://www.collegeandcareerpathways.org/ccp-students/student-resources/scholarships

I found the American Veterans Scholarships and the Shawn Carter Foundation Scholarship in the list above.

There are higher GPA requirements on some of these scholarships, so if you have a higher GPA, it is worth a look.

I just used Ctrl+F  and searched for 2.0 (Ctrl=F allows you to search terms on a webpage or a Word document) to find 2.0 scholarships on this page.

Some of the links don’t work, so you might have to google those scholarships you found with dead links.

These are just a few of the scholarships (it does require some digging beyond the initial listing), so why don’t you try and use Google, Bing, and Yahoo to search for “scholarships for 2.0 GPA” or “scholarships for college students with a low GPA.”

Scholarship Mindset—Preparing to Win the Scholarship Game, Plus More Scholarship Search Engines

March 1, 2017

How many scholarship have you applied for?

If you have applied for some, congratulations!  You have the mindset of purpose, where you will apply for scholarships as much as possible to get money to pay for college with no debt.

Making Time When Time is Fleeting

If you haven’t taken the time, you might being feeling overwhelmed. In that case, remember that if you do not set up “pockets” of time, you may never reach your goals.

Take 15 minutes today, and start searching for scholarships. Set the timer on your phone for 15 minutes and if you are interrupted, pause the timer. Once you have dealt with the interruption, go back to the timer and start it again.

If you are a TSU student, you can start by opening the TSU Foundation scholarship online application and look at the general application.

https://tnstate.academicworks.com/users/sign_in

What information can you start collecting?

Do you want to make an appointment in the Writing Center to help with the general application?

You have until March 31, 2017, to complete this application and get together supplemental material for specific scholarships, such as completed FAFSA, letters of recommendation, and short answer (250-500 words) responses.

If you can’t spend 15 minutes, spend 10 minutes; if not 10 minutes, spend 5 minutes; if not 5 minutes, spend 1 minute.

15 minutes a day for 365 days equals 90 hours in a year.

 30 minutes a day for 365 days equals 180 hours a year.

The Numbers Game

The more scholarships you apply for, the better your chances of getting some money.

However, use resources on campus to make your scholarship application stand out. Get help in the Writing Center and other places on campus to make your words shine.

If you want to create a video for the $2,500 to $25,000 Taco Bell Live Mas Scholarship, start investigating YouTube and asking communications majors how to make a great film. Seek help by asking instructors (including me) what resources on campus may be available.

https://www.livemasscholarship.com/#home

Taco Bell Live Mas Scholarship

Ages 16-24, $2,500 to $25,000 to pursue your passion

Legal resident of the 50 US and the District of Columbia

Create and submit a 2 minute or less video that tells a story of your life’s passion

Deadline: May 12, 2017

If you apply for 1 scholarship, then apply for 2 more; if you apply for 10 scholarships, then apply for 5 more.

If you apply for a 1,000 scholarships and you are only 3% successful, then you will have gotten about 30-33 scholarships. Some have chosen to reach for this height, and they have paid for college debt-free.
