NURSE Corps Scholarship Program, Deadline: May 11, 2017 and How to Find More Full-Ride Scholarships

April 17, 2017

If you are nursing major, you need to check this program out.

https://bhw.hrsa.gov/loansscholarships/nursecorps/scholarship

Selected information from webpage:

NURSE Corps Scholarship Program

As a student accepted or enrolled in a diploma, associate, baccalaureate, or graduate degree nursing program, you can receive funding for tuition, fees, and other educational costs. In exchange you must work at an eligible facility with a critical shortage of nurses-a Critical Shortage Facility (CSF)-upon graduation.

Am I Eligible for a Scholarship?

Review the following NURSE Corps Scholarship Program requirements to find out.

I am:

  • a U.S. citizen (born or naturalized), a national, or a lawful permanent resident;
  • enrolled—or accepted for enrollment—in a professional nursing degree program at an accredited school of nursing in the U.S.;
  • beginning classes no later than September 30;
  • free from any federal judgment liens;
  • free from an existing service commitment;
  • not overdue on a federal debt.

We give funding preference depending on your financial need.

Why Should I Apply for the NURSE Corps Scholarship Program?

Too many Americans—particularly in underserved areas—go without checkups, preventive screenings, vaccines, and other care, simply because there are not enough health care professionals to provide care and treatment in their communities. The NURSE Corps Scholarship Program enables you to fulfill your passion to care for underserved people in some of the neediest communities across the country.

If awarded, you will receive financial support, including:

  • tuition;
  • eligible fees;
  • annual payment for other reasonable costs, such as books, clinical supplies/instruments and uniforms; and
  • a monthly stipend ($1,334 for the 2017-2018 academic year).

Before You Apply

Before you apply, read the annually updated Application and Program Guidance. Make sure you understand the terms and conditions of the NURSE Corps contract, which outlines the requirement for fulfilling your minimum two years of service at an eligible Critical Shortage Facility.”

The deadline for the Shawn Carter Foundation Scholarship is April 30, so you should apply early, getting your materials together, leaving some time to check over your essay for grammar by visiting the TSU Writing Center (open to all Tennessee State University students).

“The Shawn Carter Foundation (SCF) was founded on the belief that any motivated individual in need should have the opportunity to further his or her education.  By removing some of the financial burdens associated with going to, surviving in, and graduating from college, the SCF plays a vital role in increasing college access and success for many motivated yet underserved youth and young adults.”

Under Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s),

“How can I maximize my chances of receiving this scholarship?

Here are some steps you can take:

1-Start your application early and complete it on time. The earlier you start the application, the better chance you have to submit the application before the deadline. You also have more time to ask us questions in case any part of the process needs clarification.

2-Tell us about yourself and use specific details when sharing your extracurricular activities. We do not know anything about you until you share it with us. Specific details can help us understand how great you are. The same can be said about your essay. We don’t expect the essay to run too long but make sure your essay helps us learn more about you and your perspectives.

3-Review your application for grammar and spelling errors.

4-The photo is optional. If you decide to provide a photo, please send us a head shot from the shoulders up similar to an ID card.”

Thurgood Marshall College Fund Scholarships, Several deadlines in April and June

https://tmcf.org/our-scholarships/current-scholarships

  1. Deadline for TMCF Lowe’s Emergency Scholarship Program: reviewed on a rolling basis through June 30, 2017

From webpage: “The Lowe’s Emergency Scholarship Program is intended to help meet the financial needs of students of up to $5,000 who encounter an emergency situation, or one-time, unusual or unforeseen expenses during their degree program that will prevent the student from continuing in college.”

If you are a TSU student, you are enrolled in one of the 47 TMCF member-schools. This scholarship is open to freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors and graduate students that have a minimum 2.5 GPA and “an approved plan to return to study if leave is requested.”

Since the scholarship is on a rolling basis, I take that to mean the scholarship givers will not wait to June 30, 2017, to award the money, but give it out if the need is very immediate.

If you are a college senior and money becomes a barrier to graduating, then you also need to check out the one-time award ranging from $500 to $3,100 “depending on account balance,” then you need to check out the TMCF Lowe’s Gap Scholarship, deadline June 30, 2017.

  1. Other TMCF Scholarships

Thurgood Marshall College Fund Scholarships, deadline for 5 current scholarships: April 30, 2017

There are several different scholarships, so you need to check them out to see if you qualify. Some range from $7,000 for the 2017-2018 academic school year or $6,200 for one year.

In total, about 500 different scholarships are given for students aspiring to be attending or attending 47 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs)—Tennessee State University is one of those schools.

I advise students to check back every 2 weeks or so for opening scholarships.

An article updated on July 1, 2016, by Penny Loretto, “Ways You Can Afford to do an Unpaid Internship”

I found the following articles by googling, “scholarships for unpaid internships.” Try out these search terms to find more articles.

Also, let google suggest other search terms, such as “funding your internship,” “money for unpaid internships,” or “internship grants for students.”

Be Creative—Create Your Own Unpaid Internship

http://www.oneweekjob.com/

from website:” Between Feb 2007 and March 2008, Sean Aiken completed an epic journey around North America, working 52 jobs in 52 weeks.

Sean Aiken graduated from college and didn’t know what he wanted to do for a career (or what he wanted to do with his life). Instead of take the first job that came along, he found a unique way of figuring it out: The One Week Job Project.

How it worked: Anyone, anywhere, could offer Sean a job for one week. Any money he earned for the work, he asked the employer to donate towards the ONE / Make Poverty History campaign. Total earned = $20,401.60

How can you adopt this idea to fit you? Perhaps you can’t afford to give up 4 weeks or 6 weeks to an unpaid internship, but you might be able to help for a week or a weekend.

Quickly write down three problems in the world you are worried about or concerned about.

Next, find organizations close to where you want to be that deal with these problems.

Then, create a plan on how you are going to present yourself. Create a 1-3 minute speech telling who you are and what you wish to give (this is sometimes called an elevator speech). Now, find a way to write or talk or connect with the organization.

Volunteer for a weekend, a day, two days, three days—consider what you can do and then do it.
