“Internship Opportunity, Washington, DC—Spring 2012

Spend the semester interning in DC while earning credit at Tennessee State University!

Internships in advocacy, business, international affairs, law and criminal justice, media and communications, political leadership and policy. Locations include the White House, Congress, Amnesty International, CNN, Interpol, NAACP, law offices, World Bank, Departments of State, Treasury, and Commerce and many more.

TSU will select and sponsor three students for the spring. You pay your TSU tuition, travel, food, and personal expenses. TSU will cover all program costs, housing, course credit, classes, and leadership forum while in DC (approx.. $12,000 value).

The contest is open to all legal U.S. residents, 18 years or older. Deadline is November 1, 2011.

NASSP Advisory List, Millions in money for high school students

For high school students, there is no better resources to find scholarships and contests for high school students than the National Association of Secondary School Principals 2010-2011 National Advisory List of Approved Student Contests and Activities

This list is for 2010-2011, so if the deadline is passed, then you know that most likely the contest will be around next year for the same time. 

For example, the Veterans of Foreign Wars 2010-2011 NATIONAL VOICE OF DEMOCRACY AUDIO-ESSAY CONTEST ran from Jan 1-Nov 1, 2011. 

This contest was open for grades 9-12, and the top prize was $30,000. Other prizes were $16,000, $10,000, and $1,000.

Buick Achievers Scholarship is offering to 100 first-time freshman up to $25,000/year, renewable up to four years. The program is also offering $2,000/year for an additional 1,000 incoming students.

  • Be high school seniors or high school graduates who are first-time college students in the fall of 2011
  • Plan to enroll in full-time undergraduate study at an accredited four-year college or university for the entire 2011-12 academic year
  • Plan to major in a course of study that focuses on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math). Select Design, Marketing, Accounting, Finance and Business majors are also eligible. Scholarship recipients will demonstrate an interest in pursuing a career in the automotive or related industries using these areas of study.

Four Deadlines loom—Tiger Scholars, Prepare!

What follows is information about TSU Scholarships, Filling out the FAFSA, Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee, Make Mine a Million, and the AARP Women’s Foundation Scholarship

1. TSU Scholarship Priority deadline, first consideration, March 15 deadline; April 1, 2011, final deadline

March 15 is the earliest deadline you want to get your information in to be considered for TSU scholarships.

April 1st is the latest you should get your information in.

For all financial based funds given by the university, the priority scholarship deadline is April 1, 2011.

This means that if you wish to qualify for scholarships that are given by TSU, you must fill out the FAFSA by April 1.

You might need some help filling out your taxes. If you made $49,000 or below, you can get help at an IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site.

 2. Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee (CFMT) Scholarships, Deadline: March 15, 2011

CFMT administers about 60 scholarships for the local Middle Tennessee community. Look at some of the following scholarships offered, especially at the Jerry Newson Scholarship, Drue Smith/Society of Professional Journalists Scholarship, Emmett H. Turner Scholarship, Teddy Wilburn Scholarship, The Woman’s Club of Nashville Scholarship, and John W. Work III Memorial Foundation Scholarship.

Some of these are very specific, pertaining to what high school you went to, what county you resided, and what particular university you are attending.

 I know of several TSU students who have received these scholarships, especially the Teddy Wilburn Scholarship. Explore them all to see which pertains to you.

 3.  Make Mine a Million, open to female entrepreneurs, Deadline: March 28, 2011
