Scholarships and Money from Community Foundations—Untapped Resources

December 18, 2025

Many people don’t realize that community foundations can be found all over the United States. These organizations provide funds for nonprofits, but many of them also administer local and state-wide scholarships.

Many of these scholarships have deadlines around this time or around January, February, or March.

There is a strategy for searching for scholarships from community foundations.

First, search for the Community Foundation in your area.

https://cof.org/page/community-foundation-locator

Find a Community Foundation Close to You—By using the Community Foundation locator, you can find community foundations close to you. Some community foundations serve a large city or a section of your state.

See if the community foundation administers scholarships or other programs that might be helpful to you.

Another method is to do a simple Google search using specific terms like “scholarships given by community foundations in illinois.”

This is one of the organizations that shows up: Community Foundation of Northern Illinois.

https://www.cfnil.org/scholarships

Here is the scholarship page for that organization, Deadline Feb 1, 2026 for 120 scholarships, and later deadlines for two scholarships, April 1, 2026.

Search for community foundations and see if they offer scholarships.

Second, search for a community foundation close to the college or university you want to attend.

For Scholarship Tigers (current students at Tennessee State University and future TSU students), the community foundation closest to TSU is the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee (CFMT).

Community Foundation Scholarships, D: Feb 1, 2026

By studying the CFMT scholarships, you can find several that apply to TSU students (selected criteria included), such as

Digital Responsibility Scholarships, One worth $1,000, D: Jan 30, 2026

Some scholarships are not difficult. This one requires some thought, but only 140 characters to describe something you would rather be doing than spending time with technology.

https://www.digitalresponsibility.org/technology-addiction-awareness-scholarship

$1,000 Technology Addiction Scholarship, D: Jan 30, 2026

From webpage:

“This scholarship helps you understand the negative effects of too much screen time.

Who may apply: You must be a high school freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior or a current or entering college or graduate school student of any level. Home schooled students are also eligible. There is no age limit. You must also be a U.S. citizen or legal resident.

Young people spend an average of 7.5 hours a day consuming media—and this doesn’t include computer use for schoolwork—according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. With technology always at the ready at your fingertips, it can be a challenge to unplug. But taking a break from technology is healthy for both the mind and body. The purpose of this scholarship is to help you understand the negative effects of too much screen time.

More than $65,000 in Scholarships for the Helping Professions and More—Future Therapists, Counselors, Clinical Social Workers, Business Owners, Teachers, STEM majors, and Dreamers

November 17, 2025

The helping professions can be defined as any occupation where you intend to help others.

Therapists, social workers, business owners, teachers, counselors, and STEM majors are all examples of future endeavors that can help others.

James Hollis, a Jungian psychoanalyst, uses a question in deciding on major life decisions, which is “Does this choice diminish me or enlarge me?”

To further extend this question to the professional world, “Does this profession diminish me or enlarge me?”  If you find most of the actions enlarge you, does that include helping and mentoring others. Then, most likely, you are involved in a helping profession. This question could further be extended in your relationships with others or clients: “Does this action I recommend diminish or enlarge the other person?”

I recently was invited by Dr. Kalai Mugilan to have a conversation about AI and research in one of his classes, and many of his students are entering the helping professions and giving back to others.

In that spirit, here are a few scholarship possibilities to assist them in paying for college and not rack up large amounts of debt. Others can benefit from these also. Several of these have been featured in a different format on this blog before.

Scholarship Contests: Two Emails May be the Way to Go  and How to Avoid Scams

October 9, 2025

Use Two Emails

One rule of trying out for online scholarship contests is to not fall for scams.

Contests should never charge anything, ask for your social security number, and never guarantee you awards.

https://www.usnews.com/education/best-colleges/articles/how-to-avoid-scholarship-scams

A good article to give you some steps to distinguish between legitimate scholarships and scams is found above, “How to Avoid Scholarship Scams” by Cole Claybourn, March 15, 2024.

I highly recommend setting up two accounts for scholarships, one email for scholarship applications that you make on the college’s website or through websites like https://bold.org/.

The second email is for scholarship contests, such as the $15,000 Citizens Scholarship, $40,000 Niche Scholarship, or $10,000 Dr. Pepper Cheez-It Tuition Award.

Four Scholarship Contests for You to Consider

1. https://www.drpeppercheezittuition2025.com/

$10,000 Dr. Pepper Cheez-It Tuition Award, D: Oct 31, 2025

From website: “School is back in session and so is the chance to win a $10,000 tuition award towards education expenses, loans, or even to gift to a student.

Legal Residents of the 50 United States (D.C.) 18 Years and Older.”

You basically sign up and play games. Eventually, there will be a drawing for $10,000 tuition award. You can play games daily.

2. https://www.citizensbank.com/student-loans/scholarship.aspx

$15,000 Citizens Scholarship Sweepstakes, $2,500 monthly prizes

From website: “For the monthly drawings and annual grand prize winner, high school seniors 18 years and older who will be enrolled in college within one (1) year of winning an award, plus undergrads, grad students and parents or legal guardians of any of those students are eligible to win.”

By reviewing the Official Rules, you can determine if you are eligible for the $2,500 Citizens Building the Workforce of the Future Scholarship, awarded quarterly.

3. https://www.sallie.com/scholarships/no-essay

From website: “The $2,000 No-Essay Scholarship Sweepstakes is only open to legal residents of the 50 United States, the District of Columbia and any US Territory age 16 or older at the time of entry, and who meet one (1) of the four (4) following eligibility requirements at the time of entry:

  • a parent who currently has a child enrolled in an accredited college or university located within the United States;
  • a student who is currently enrolled in an accredited college or university located within the United States;
  • a parent who currently has a child enrolled as a high school senior or junior located within the United States;
  • a student who is currently enrolled as a high school senior or junior who intends to enroll in an accredited college or university located with the United States, within a year of graduating high school (“Entrant”).”

4. https://www.niche.com/colleges/scholarships/40k-no-essay-scholarship-202510

$40,000 Niche No Essay Scholarship, D: Oct 15, 2025

From webpage: “All high school and college students, as well as anyone looking to attend college or graduate school in the next year. Please note: Not everyone is eligible for this scholarship. Niche sponsored scholarships and sweepstakes are for people with US citizenship or a valid Visa/US passport only.”

More than $5,000 in Scholarship and Internship Opportunities

September 8, 2025

$5,000 in Scholarship Possibilities

1. https://couragetogrowscholarship.com/

$1,000 Courage to Grown Scholarship, D: Sept 30, 2025

“Eligibility: You must be a junior or senior in high school or college student with a minimum GPA of 2.5 or better. U.S. citizens only please”

Answer the scholarship question of why you deserve this scholarship in 250 words or less.

Helpful suggestions:

Check the website for information on what the Courage to Grow Scholarship is about and how the organization awards the scholarship. I am guessing if you are a freshman in your first semester of college, then consider your GPA from your last semester in high school. (You could even contact the scholarship organizers to ask them this question.)

Since you are writing about yourself, you most likely won’t use the word you (2nd person), but use I and me (1st person) or when talking about others, their names or identities and third person pronouns (for example, father, mother, Mom, Dad, he, she, his, her, etc).

You can see who has won in the past and what they wrote. Be inspired, but don’t copy: https://couragetogrowscholarship.com/award-recipients/

2. https://www.parent-volunteer.org/building-bridges-scholarship

$1,000 Building Bridges Scholarship, D: Sept 30, 2025
