Scholarship Coaching

The writer of this blog is Mike Turner. I am a writing consultant/instructor in the AARC’s Writing Center at Tennessee State University. I have been offering guidance and how to find scholarships to lead to a more money, less college debt future since 1996.

Besides assistance with any writing project (papers, applications, resumes, scholarship applications, graduate school applications, just to name a few), I also give scholarship coaching sessions.

If you are a TSU student, faculty, staff, or alum, you can sign up for a scholarship coaching session for 30 minutes or an hour.

I ask you some general questions such as age, major, GPA, future aspirations, hobbies, permanent residence, and special situations (first generation college student, foster care, etc). With such information, we can then go about looking for scholarships, internships, or other sources for your major and future profession to help finance your education without you incurring crippling debt.

At the end, I send you a PDF of the information we have compiled in a Scholarship Tigers Report.

Information about our summer hours and how to sign up below.

Over $30,000 in Scholarships and How to Make Time When You Have No Time

April 24, 2025

Time and Deadline Consciousness—How to Make Time When You Have No Time

Today is April 24, and you might ask yourself, “How did I get here? Where did 2025 go? Why is April going so fast?”

If you are a TSU student, you know that April 25 is the last day of class, and Final exams are given April 28-May 2.

Also, many scholarship deadlines that have been posted on this blog are rapidly approaching!

How do you reconcile the time it takes to search for and apply for scholarships with your immediate need to finish your classwork and do well?

I have a few suggestions.

I. Search this blog for scholarships and close deadlines.

Spend 5-15 minutes just reviewing past scholarship posts for April and seeing what deadlines are approaching.

See what the deadline is, what the qualifications are, and take note of them. This is your first step.

https://www.tmcf.org/students-alumni/scholarships/open-scholarships/

For example, the deadline for the Thurgood Marshall College Fund scholarships is April 25, 2025, at 11:59 pm Eastern time.

II. Make an appointment in the Writing Center (either online or in person).

By designating 30 minutes or an hour to scholarship applications, essays, or videos, you are choosing to spend some of your time working on scholarship material.

Some scholarships are quite easy, requiring only 140 characters, 3 sentences, or 250 words, such as

$1,000 E-waste Scholarship, D: Apr 30, 2025

Prompt: Explain in 250 words or less why you believe you should be awarded this scholarship.

GPA of 2.5 or better. Must be a junior or senior in high school or college student. U.S. citizens.

III. Work on scholarships in three-, five-, and ten- minute bites.

Keep a notebook or your phone note taking app to write down ideas or write applications when you find a minute or two available.

Then, schedule a 1-2 hour session that you keep with yourself at night to apply for as many scholarships as you can. You don’t have to be perfect, just good enough.

If music is not too much of a distraction, you might want to listen to some as you complete applications. Just make sure that the music doesn’t appear in any videos that you make or lyrics don’t accidentally get written into your applications.

other Scholarship America Scholarships

$10,000 National STEM Excellence Scholarship Program, D: Apr 28, 2025 (up to 100 awards will be granted)

Selected criteria from the website:

“Only the first 1,500 applications will be accepted, and the application window may close early as a result.

Applicants to the National STEM Excellence Scholarship Program must:

  • Be high school seniors, high school graduates or current college undergraduates in the United States (U.S.) who plan to enroll in a full-time undergraduate study at an accredited four-year college or university for the entire 2025-26 academic year.
  • Be seeking a degree in a STEM related area of study.
  • Have a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale (or its equivalent)
  • Awards are for undergraduate study only.”

Notice the wording, STEM related area of study: I wondered if Nursing would be considered STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) related, and the reply back was YES.

The scholarship wrote back, “When the applicant creates their profile, please make sure they select Science/Technology/Engineering/Math as their “Field of Study” and not “Health and Medicine.” This will allow them to match to the scholarship.”

If you have questions whether your major is STEM-related, contact the scholarship provider via email at stemexcellence@scholarshipamerica.org or call Customer Service at 507-931-0783.

Lesson: If not sure, ask questions.

A Little Experiment

Many times in life we don’t pursue endeavors because we have pre-decided what the outcomes will be. And our imaginations run wild, dreaming up all kinds of negative scenarios about ourselves and the world.

I have discovered that if you conduct little experiments, making a small action toward breaking down your resistance, that you can often persevere and continue. Here is a little experiment: if you are reading this, and it is between Dec 19, 2024-Jan 1, 2025– email Mike Turner at mjturner@tnstate.edu, and we can set up a Zoom session for 10 minutes or so to talk about any of the scholarships above or any part of the process of paying for school without amassing large amounts of debt.
