Fail Your Way to Success

Felecia Hatcher wanted to go to college and was told by her guidance counselor she would not be able to go. She had a GPA that “fluctuated between a 2.1 and a 2.7” (5), and “won over a $100,000 to attend college” (back cover).

Felecia Hatcher, author of THE “C” STUDENTS GUIDE TO SCHOLARSHIPS and START YOUR BUSINESS ON A RAMEN NOODLE BUDGET, discusses the importance of sharing your failure story in the following TED Talk video:

As Ms. Hatcher mentions in her talk, our society is filled with stories of success, but we don’t hear the stories of failures.

Learning often involves failing. Remember back to something you know how to do well, such as play a video game  or sing a song or play a sport or do well in math or English.

Did you always know how to do that well? Remember, you had to fail before you became good– you had to try and try, readjust, make corrections, keep practicing, to get further, to become better, to become proficient.

You failed your way to success.

Many adults give up after only 5 or 7 or less tries. However, as a baby, you tried to walk and you had to fail over 100, over a 1,000 times, over many more times.

Did somebody stop and say to you, “Oh, walking seems too much for you. You’ve tried over 100 times. It’s time to rest. Walking doesn’t seem the thing for you.” No, you had enough courage and skill to keep going because your baby brain was smart enough not to stop.

Ask those people you admire have they ever had difficulties and when they say yes, then you ask them what did they do. Take notes if you can.

Fail your way to success and more college money.

I liked Felecia Hatcher’s THE “C” STUDENTS GUIDE TO SCHOLARSHIPS so much, I bought it as a resource.
